For Chipotle, it's the first stock split in the company's 30-year history, and its announcement echoed Walmart's. Both are hoping, through the availability of an employee stock purchase plan and financial education, they'll get more workers to invest. Chipotle, even further out on the market chart, has shares nearing $3,000 — its stock split is to be effective June 26. ESPP versus fractional sharesEven without a stock split, employees could have already purchased shares of their company, or at least fractional shares, through a brokerage account. Company stock and financial educationSplitting a stock and having a generous ESPP can only go so far when it comes to encouraging employees to buy the company stock.

Facial recognition frequently misidentifies people of colorMIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini found that facial recognition technology misidentified black women up to 35% of the time, the New York Times reported in 2018. When fewer photos of people from other racial and gender groups are used, facial recognition tech is less accurate at identifying people of those backgrounds, the study said. In some cases, it's possible to opt out of using facial recognition technology — and its high error rate. But sidestepping facial recognition often isn't possible, said Gideon Christian, a law professor at the University of Calgary who has written about the legal and societal aspects of facial recognition technology. During a call with analysts after its February earnings, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon talked about the gen AI search capabilities in its app. As a technology company, Walmart has to experiment a lot, and in the case of adding generative AI search capabilities, there's a very low cost for failure, she said. AI and search, shopping business model shiftsIt's not only Walmart investing in this type of search in the retail sector. Amazon's AI shopping assistant Rufus lets people have a conversation with the platform about what they need rather than just looking for direct items. Walmart, another of Tengler's top "old economy" AI plays, has gained 14.4% so far this year, double the broader market. "They've benefited from embracing not just robotics and digitization, but generative AI in their e-commerce business and in improving margins," Tengler said of Walmart.

The Target logo is seen on its store on 42nd Street in Times Square, New York City. Grocery drives about 20% of Target's annual sales compared with nearly 60% of Walmart's annual sales in the U.S. Some of Target's stores are also losing a separate traffic driver: pharmacies. CVS Health said in January that it would close some locations in Target stores, as part of a broader plan by CVS to reduce its store count. CVS and Target declined to say how many of the pharmacies would be shuttered.

The company says it has now delivered over one billion orders across its 85,000-store network encompassing 1,500 retail partners. "There were a lot of questions about whether Instacart would be just another pandemic fad," CEO Fidji Simo told CNBC . Simo, who took the top role at the company in 2021 and launched the Instacart Health delivery service in 2022, has made health care a personal passion. "Patients often go through years-long diagnostic odysseys, bouncing around from specialist to specialist with no one looking at the whole picture," Simo wrote on her LinkedIn.

Every day, thousands of shoppers push their ultra-wide shopping carts through Costco's warehouse doors, collectively spending more than $237.7 billion last fiscal year. The wholesale club boasts 129.5 million membership cardholders representing households and small and midsize businesses, but which shoppers are the "typical" Costco shoppers? The retailer also consistently leads the pack when it comes to customer satisfaction, though Walmart and Target are gaining ground. The typical customer visits Costco every two weeks or so — about 30 trips per year — and spends about $100 per trip for a total annual expense of $3,018. Compared with other shoppers, Costco members are more likely to be homeowners who love organic foods and actively manage their health.
